Geography: The town is located in a sloping position from the south-western side of a hill on the right of the river Tenna. It is embraced by the amphitheater of the Sibillini Mountains from which the highest peaks can be seen in wide panoramas: from Monte Vettore to the south, to Monte Sibilla, to Monte Priora (all over 2000 meters above sea level), up to Monte Amandola and in away to the north of Pizzo di Meta. Gola dell'Infernaccio, dug by the Tenna between the Priora and the Sibilla.

The municipal territory is crossed from west to north-east by the high valley of the Tenna river, whose source is embedded between the slopes of Monte Priora to the north, Monte Sibilla to the south, and the Cannafusto peak to the west. Near the springs there is a large pasture which takes the name of Capotenna or Prati di S.Antonio, as in ancient times there was a hermitage dedicated to the Saint, through which Guerrin Meschino also passed during his ascent to the Sibyl's cave. From Capotenna, a glacial valley rises westwards to Passo Cattivo (in the district of Castelsantangelo sul Nera), a steep pass that separates the Tenna and Nera valleys.
