Historic Palazzo "Sorbatti" for Sale in Massa Fermana, Fermo, Marche, Italy
In the charming historic center of Massa Fermana-a medieval town renowned for its hat-making tradition and beautifully set among the rolling hills between the Sibillini Mountains and the Adriatic coast-stands this finely restored historic palazzo. The property has been carefully renovated with meticulous attention to materials, featuring mostly original solid wood doors, many of them hand-decorated.
The palazzo is arranged over four levels (S2-S1-Ground-First). The main entrance opens onto the street facing the Town Hall and the village square. The entryway welcomes you with an elegant 19th-century staircase and access to the living area, where a hallway connects the various rooms: living room, dining room, breakfast room, kitchen, and a guest bathroom. From here, both the main staircase and a secondary spiral service staircase lead to the upper floor, which hosts four bedrooms, a bathroom, and a balcony with breathtaking views over the surrounding hills and the Sibillini Mountains. Another spiral staircase leads up to the attic floor with a habitable loft space.
On the lower ground levels, the former cellars have been transformed into a rustic entertaining area with spacious barrel-vaulted rooms, a large kitchen with fireplace, pantries, and welcoming rooms perfect for hosting friends and enjoying fine wines from the family collection. Descending further, one reaches the beautifully restored ancient wine cellars, where original vats and containers once used for pressing harvested grapes can still be admired. These cellars also feature a secondary entrance from the parallel street, Via Guerrieri.
Massa Fermana is a small town of about 900 inhabitants, located at 349 meters above sea level and part of the Archdiocese of Fermo.
The earliest record of Massa Fermana dates back to 1050, when it was under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Fermo. Roman funerary inscriptions attest to its ancient past. In the 13th century, it belonged to the Brunforte family; members such as Guglielmo da Massa and his son Valerio, aligned with the Ghibellines, were known for violent episodes of war that shook the town until it was again brought under Fermo's authority. In 1808 Massa Fermana lost its autonomy, being annexed to Montappone, only to regain it definitively in 1816.
Among the main sites of cultural and artistic interest are: the Church of Saints Lorenzo, Silvestro, and Ruffino, which houses an important work by Carlo Crivelli-the Polyptych of Massa Fermana (1468), the painter's first known work in the Marche region-alongside the Madonna and Child with Angels by his brother Vittore; the Municipal Art Gallery inside the Town Hall, with works by Vincenzo Pagani, Durante Nobili, Giovanni Andrea De Magistris, two frescoes, a polychrome papier-mâché bas-relief, as well as sacred furnishings from the former convent of San Francesco; and finally, the Museum of Ancient Crafts, dedicated to traditional trades, with special focus on the work of cobblers and barbers.
