Historic Palazzo Sorbatti for Sale in Massa Fermana, Fermo, Marche, Italy
In the charming historic centre of Massa Fermana-an ancient medieval village renowned for its hat-making tradition and beautifully set among the rolling hills between the Sibillini Mountains and the Adriatic coast-stands this magnificent period palazzo, expertly restored with exceptional attention to detail. The renovation preserved its original character, including most of the solid-wood doors, many of which retain their hand-painted decorations.
The palazzo is arranged over four levels (Basement 2, Basement 1, Ground Floor, First Floor).
The main entrance faces the Town Hall and the central square of the village. It opens into an elegant foyer featuring a remarkable 19th-century staircase and access to the living areas. A hallway connects the various rooms: living room, dining room, breakfast room, kitchen, and a guest bathroom.
Both the main staircase and a secondary spiral service staircase lead to the first floor, where you will find four bedrooms, a bathroom, and a balcony offering breathtaking views across the surrounding hills and the Sibillini Mountains. A further spiral staircase leads up to the attic level, with a spacious and usable loft.
The lower-ground floors host the former wine cellars, now transformed into a warm and inviting rustic entertaining area. These levels feature beautiful barrel-vaulted rooms, a large traditional kitchen with fireplace, storage rooms, and generous spaces perfect for hosting guests and enjoying fine wines from the family collection.
Descending further, one reaches the oldest cellars-meticulously restored-where original vats and containers once used for grape pressing can still be admired. This level also benefits from a secondary entrance on the parallel street, Via Guerrieri.
Massa Fermana is a small town of about 900 inhabitants, situated at 349 metres above sea level and part of the Archdiocese of Fermo.
The earliest known record of Massa Fermana dates back to 1050, when it was under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Fermo. Roman funerary inscriptions found in the area attest to its ancient origins. In the 13th century, it belonged to the Brunforte family; members such as Guglielmo da Massa and his son Valerio-aligned with the Ghibelline faction-played key roles in the turbulent local conflicts of the period until the town was once again brought under Fermo's control. In 1808 the village lost its autonomy and was annexed to Montappone, regaining independence only in 1816.
Among the main artistic and cultural sites are:
- The Church of Saints Lorenzo, Silvestro, and Ruffino, home to a major masterpiece by Carlo Crivelli-the Polyptych of Massa Fermana (1468), the artist's first known work in the Marche region-and a Madonna and Child with Angels by his brother Vittore.
- The Municipal Art Gallery, housed in the Town Hall, showcasing works by Vincenzo Pagani, Durante Nobili, Giovanni Andrea De Magistris, two frescoes, a polychrome papier-mâché bas-relief, and sacred furnishings from the former Convent of San Francesco.
- The Museum of Ancient Crafts, dedicated to traditional trades, particularly those of the cobbler and the barber.
